How Much Does an Online Store Cost in Costa Rica? Real 2026 Prices

One of the most frequent questions we get at NmSoftwareLab is: how much does it cost to build an online store in Costa Rica?

The short answer is: it depends. But that answer doesn’t help you plan your investment. So in this guide we give you real numbers, broken down by solution type, so you can make an informed decision without surprises along the way.

What determines the cost of an online store?

Before looking at the numbers, understanding what factors move the price helps you evaluate any proposal you receive:

Base platform: Building on Shopify, WooCommerce, or from scratch isn’t the same. Each option has different development, licensing and maintenance costs.

Number of products: A store with 10 products is very different from one with 500. Loading, organization and inventory management scale the cost.

Local integrations: In Costa Rica you need to integrate SINPE Móvil, local payment gateways (BAC Credomatic, Banco Nacional, PayPhone) or international ones (Stripe, PayPal). Each integration has a technical cost.

Custom design: Are you using an existing template or do you want a unique design for your brand? The difference can be $1,500 to $5,000 in design alone.

Special features: Shipping calculators, coupon systems, memberships, multi-currency, online bookings. Every extra feature adds to the budget.

Options and real prices in Costa Rica 2026

Option 1: Shopify with a template

Initial investment range: $500 — $1,200

Shopify is the world’s most popular e-commerce platform for good reason: it’s fast to implement, reliable, and has thousands of apps available.

What’s included in this range:

  • Store setup
  • Premium template installation and customization
  • Initial product upload (up to 50)
  • Payment gateway configuration
  • Domain and SSL

Recurring costs to consider:

  • Shopify Basic plan: $39 USD/month
  • Transaction fee: 2% if you don’t use Shopify Payments (not available in CR)
  • Additional apps: $10–$50 USD/month each

Who it’s ideal for: Businesses starting out that want to launch fast and have a standard catalog without complex customizations.

The trick most people won’t tell you: Shopify Payments doesn’t operate in Costa Rica, which means you pay a transaction fee on every sale. At high sales volume, that percentage can easily exceed the cost of a custom solution.

Option 2: WooCommerce (WordPress + E-commerce)

Initial investment range: $800 — $2,000

WooCommerce is a WordPress plugin that turns a website into an online store. It’s the most-used option in the Costa Rican market because many local web designers work with WordPress.

What’s included in this range:

  • WordPress + WooCommerce installation and setup
  • Custom premium template
  • Product and category setup
  • Local payment gateway integration
  • Shipping configuration

Recurring costs:

  • Hosting: $20–$80 USD/month depending on volume
  • Premium plugins: $100–$300 USD/year
  • Maintenance and updates: variable

Who it’s ideal for: Businesses that already have WordPress or want more control over their site without paying high monthly fees.

The most common problem: WooCommerce tends to get slow with many products or plugins. If not optimized correctly, it ends up being a slow store that scares customers away. We cover that in detail in this article about slow stores.

Option 3: Custom development

Initial investment: quote based on project

An online store built from scratch, with exactly the features your business needs and none of the limitations of a generic platform.

What’s included in this range:

  • Custom UI/UX design
  • Frontend and backend development
  • Proprietary inventory management system
  • Integrations with existing systems (ERP, CRM, e-invoicing)
  • Custom admin panel
  • Performance optimization from the code up

Recurring costs:

  • Cloud hosting: $30–$150 USD/month depending on traffic
  • Maintenance: agreed by contract, typically $200–$500 USD/month

Who it’s ideal for: Companies with complex sales processes, large catalogs, a need for integrations with internal systems, or where technology is a core part of the competitive advantage.

Which option is right for your business?

Choose Shopify if:

  • You’re starting out and want to validate the business before investing more
  • Your catalog is standard (clothing, accessories, simple physical products)
  • You don’t need complex integrations with internal systems
  • You want to launch in under 4 weeks

Choose WooCommerce if:

  • You already have a WordPress site you want to turn into a store
  • You need full control over content and SEO
  • Your initial budget is limited but you can invest in maintenance

Choose custom development if:

  • Your sales process has complex logic (configurators, variable pricing, memberships)
  • You need to integrate the store with your Ministerio de Hacienda e-invoicing system
  • You manage inventory across multiple warehouses or points of sale
  • Your sales volume makes platform commissions a significant cost

Payment integrations in Costa Rica: what you need to know

This is the point that complicates local quotes the most. The most-used options:

SINPE Móvil: Has no official API for direct integration into stores. Current solutions use intermediary systems or manual confirmation, which adds friction to the checkout process.

BAC Credomatic: Offers e-commerce integration but has business account requirements and an approval process that can take 2–4 weeks.

PayPhone: Costa Rican solution with faster integration, accepts cards and SINPE. A good option for the local market.

Stripe: Available in Costa Rica since 2023. Excellent technical integration, accepts international cards. Fee of 2.9% + $0.30 per transaction.

PayPal: An option for international customers, but with high fees and friction withdrawing to Costa Rican accounts.

Mistakes that make the project more expensive than it needs to be

Asking for everything upfront: Many companies ask for features they won’t use in the first 6 months. Iterative development — launching a working version and adding features over time — is cheaper and more effective.

Not considering recurring costs: The development price is just the start. Hosting, maintenance, plugins, payment gateways and digital marketing are ongoing costs you need to factor into your business model.

Choosing purely on price: A store built by the cheapest provider that later fails at checkout or is impossible to maintain ends up costing far more than doing it right from the start.
