Shopify vs. Custom Development in Costa Rica: Which Should You Choose for Your Online Store? [2026]

It’s the question we hear most from Costa Rican entrepreneurs before starting an e-commerce project: should I use Shopify or invest in something custom?

There’s no universal answer. It depends on your business stage, sales volume, catalog complexity, and mid-term goals. This guide gives you the criteria to decide with clarity.

What is Shopify, and what is custom development?

Shopify is an e-commerce platform delivered as a service (SaaS). You pay a monthly subscription and get access to already-built infrastructure: shopping cart, inventory management, payment gateway, admin panel. You just customize the look and add your products.

Custom development means building your store from scratch, with the right tech stack for your business, without the restrictions or recurring costs of an external platform. The code is yours, the architecture is yours, and the features are exactly what you need.

Shopify: when it makes sense

The real advantages

Launch speed. With Shopify you can have an operating store in 2–3 weeks. If you need to validate a product or launch fast before a peak season, this is hard to beat.

Proven infrastructure. Shopify handles hosting, security, updates and scalability. You don’t have to worry about whether your server can handle Black Friday traffic.

App ecosystem. Over 8,000 available apps to add features: email marketing, product reviews, loyalty programs, live chat. Many are plug-and-play.

24/7 support. For companies without an internal tech team, having support available around the clock has real value.

The limitations nobody tells you about

Shopify Payments doesn’t operate in Costa Rica. This means you pay an extra 0.5%–2% fee on every transaction if you use an external gateway. At $10,000 in monthly sales, that’s $50 to $200 in extra fees every single month.

The code isn’t yours. Shopify has its own template language (Liquid) and restrictions on what you can modify. If you need a feature the platform doesn’t support, you’re limited to whatever exists in the App Store, or to complex, expensive workarounds.

Costs scale with the business. The Basic plan ($39/mo) has reporting and staff limitations. The Shopify plan ($105/mo) adds features. The Advanced plan ($399/mo) is needed for advanced reports and calculated shipping. As you grow, monthly cost grows with you.

Limited visual customization. You can customize a lot with a premium template, but if your brand needs a very specific user experience different from existing templates, Shopify becomes an obstacle.

Custom development: when it makes sense

The real advantages

Full ownership. The code, the database, the architecture: all yours. You’re not depending on Shopify not raising its prices, not changing its terms, or not discontinuing a feature you use.

No transaction fees. You pay the payment gateway’s fee (Stripe, BAC, PayPhone) but there’s no additional middleman taking a cut of every sale.

Unlimited integrations. Need to connect your store to your Ministerio de Hacienda e-invoicing system? To your ERP? To a multi-warehouse inventory system? In custom development, any integration is possible.

Optimized performance. A well-built custom store can load in under 1 second. Shopify stores, loaded with apps and third-party scripts, frequently exceed 3–4 seconds on mobile. As we discussed in this article, that difference directly impacts your conversions.

Real scalability. Your store can grow in features exactly as your business requires, without waiting for Shopify to ship the feature you need or paying for an app that does 10% of what you actually need.

The real limitations

Higher initial investment. A custom store starts at $5,000 and up. If you’re validating a new business, that investment might not make sense yet.

Development time. A well-executed custom project takes 6 to 16 weeks, depending on complexity. It’s not the option if you need to launch in 2 weeks.

Requires technical maintenance. Since it’s yours, the responsibility for maintenance, security updates and backups falls on you or your development provider.

The tipping point: when do you outgrow Shopify?

There’s a moment in many online stores’ lifecycle where Shopify starts costing more than it’s worth. That moment tends to arrive when:

Fees exceed the cost of building your own. If you pay 2% extra on $15,000 in monthly sales, that’s $300/month. Over a year, that’s $3,600 — nearly the cost of migrating to your own solution.

Apps pile up. It’s common to end up paying $200–$400/month in Shopify apps to cover basic features that would be included in a custom build.

Limitations hold you back. When your sales team keeps saying “we can’t do that with our store,” you’re leaving money on the table.

Performance drops. Every app you add to Shopify injects additional JavaScript that slows your store down. With 8–10 active apps, your PageSpeed score can drop to 40–50 on mobile.

The strategy we recommend

For most Costa Rican businesses, the answer isn’t “Shopify or custom forever” — it’s when to make the switch.

Stage 1 (Validation): Shopify or WooCommerce. Launch fast, validate that the business sells, learn what you actually need. Minimal investment.

Stage 2 (Growth): When your monthly sales exceed $5,000–$8,000, or when platform limitations start holding your growth back, it’s time to evaluate a custom solution.

Stage 3 (Scale): With your own platform, you can build exactly what your business needs, with no platform limits and no growing fees.

A concrete case: the math behind the decision

Imagine a Costa Rican store with these numbers:

  • $12,000 in monthly sales
  • Shopify plan: $105/month
  • Transaction fee (2%): $240/month
  • Essential apps: $120/month
  • Total monthly: $465 USD
  • Total yearly: $5,580 USD

With that platform spend accumulated, in many cases a custom solution ends up cheaper mid-term, on top of giving you full code ownership and zero sales fees.

The logic is clear: Shopify is faster to launch, custom development gives you more control and lower recurring costs long-term.
